Structural engineers in Oxford

Structural calculations, drawings and surveys for homes, developments and commercial buildings across Oxford, delivered remotely nationwide with site visits arranged across the city and county.

Structural engineering across Oxford

Oxford's building stock ranges from the historic college and period core to dense Victorian terraces in Jericho, East Oxford and Cowley, interwar and post-war housing across Headington, Marston and Rose Hill, and newer development towards Barton, Blackbird Leys and the growing edges of the city. Conservation areas and listed buildings are common near the centre and in the older suburbs, so extensions and alterations often have to work within tight heritage and planning constraints.

We provide the full structural service for the city: Eurocode calculations and drawings for extensions, loft conversions, wall removals and new openings, structural surveys and inspection reports, and design for new build, refurbishment and commercial work. Desktop calculations and reports are delivered anywhere in Oxford quickly, and site inspections are arranged across the city and the surrounding county.

Ground conditions and foundations in Oxford

Oxford's foundations are strongly influenced by its clay geology. Much of the city and its lower ground is underlain by Oxford Clay, a firm, grey mudstone that weathers to a shrink-swell clay near the surface, moving with seasonal moisture and sensitive to nearby trees. The higher ground, such as Headington, is capped by limestone and sands, giving firmer bearing, while the broad floodplains of the Thames and Cherwell carry river terrace gravels and softer, compressible alluvial deposits, along with a well known flood risk in low-lying areas.

We match the foundation design to the ground rather than assuming a standard depth. On Oxford Clay we check foundation depth against shrinkage and tree influence, on the limestone-capped high ground we take advantage of firmer bearing, and on floodplain gravels and alluvium near the rivers we may recommend deeper or engineered foundations. Where an extension ties into existing foundations we check bearing and the interface so the structures move together, and where trees have been removed or added near a plot we account for the long-term ground movement that can follow.

How we work with Oxford clients

Most structural design is produced from drawings, a measured survey and photographs, so a service-area practice rarely holds up an Oxford project. We turn domestic calculations around promptly and coordinate with your architect, builder and Building Control, and we are familiar with the demands of conservation areas and period property across the city.

Where a site visit is needed, for a structural survey, a movement assessment on shrinkable clay, or an inspection of period or existing structure, we arrange it across Oxford and Oxfordshire. Extensions on the city's tight terraced plots often depend on a single steel beam carrying the wall above, and getting the beam size, the bearing and the padstone right is what keeps the work straightforward on site. Every output is tied to the Eurocodes and Approved Document A and backed by professional indemnity cover, and we support clients across the UK on the same basis.

Questions

Common questions

Do you cover the whole of Oxford?

Yes. We provide structural calculations, surveys and design across Oxford and Oxfordshire, from Jericho and Cowley to Headington, Marston and the surrounding towns. Desktop work is delivered remotely and site visits are arranged across the area.

Do you need to visit my Oxford property?

Not always. Calculations for extensions, lofts and wall removals are usually produced from drawings and photographs. A visit is arranged where a survey, movement assessment on clay, or inspection of period structure is required.

Can you provide calculations for Building Control in Oxford?

Yes. We prepare Eurocode structural calculations and drawings ready for Oxford City Council Building Control or an approved inspector, written to demonstrate compliance with Approved Document A.

Does the Oxford Clay affect my foundations?

It can. Oxford Clay shrinks and swells with moisture and is sensitive to nearby trees, so we check foundation depth against shrinkage risk rather than assuming a standard depth, and detail the foundation to suit the ground on your plot.
