Structural engineers in Liverpool

Structural engineering, Building Control calculations and surveys for homes, developments and commercial projects across Liverpool, delivered remotely nationwide with site visits arranged across Merseyside.

Structural engineering across Liverpool

Liverpool has a rich and varied building stock, from Georgian terraces around the Canning and Hope Street area, to Victorian and Edwardian housing in Toxteth, Anfield and Wavertree, interwar and post-war estates across the outer districts, and the warehouse and dock conversions of the waterfront and Baltic Triangle. Each raises its own structural questions, whether that is removing a spine wall in a Georgian terrace, forming a loft in a bay-fronted Victorian house, or converting a dockside warehouse.

We provide the full structural remit for Liverpool projects: Eurocode calculations and drawings for extensions, loft conversions and wall removals, structural surveys and inspection reports, and design for new build, conversion and commercial work. Desktop calculations and reports are delivered anywhere in Merseyside quickly, and where a survey or site inspection is needed we arrange it across the area.

Ground conditions around Liverpool

Liverpool sits largely on the Sherwood Sandstone, the local red sandstone that outcrops across the city and was quarried for many of its older buildings. Where present near the surface it gives firm bearing, but it is overlain in many areas by glacial till, sands and gravels, and by softer alluvial and estuarine deposits along the Mersey and in the low-lying dock areas. Made ground is widespread on the waterfront and former industrial land, and the sandstone's history of quarrying and tunnelling means old workings and cellars are found on some plots.

We design foundations to the ground rather than a default depth, specifying strip, trench-fill, raft or piled solutions to suit the plot. On the waterfront and former dock land we allow for made ground and softer estuarine deposits, and where the sandstone is close to the surface we design to take advantage of the firm bearing it provides. Liverpool's bay-fronted Victorian and Edwardian terraces were built on shallow footings, so when a rear extension or a knock-through alters the load path we check the existing foundations and the bearings at the party walls before specifying the new beam, and we recommend trial holes where the ground history is uncertain.

How we work with Liverpool clients

Most structural work is done from your drawings and survey information, so a service-area model suits Liverpool projects well. We turn desktop calculations and reports around quickly, and we coordinate with your architect, builder and the Building Control team, local authority or approved inspector, so the structure and the design agree before anything is priced on site.

Where a physical inspection is needed, for a survey, a movement assessment or a check of existing terrace or warehouse structure, we arrange a visit across Liverpool and Merseyside. Every output is tied to the Eurocodes and Approved Document A, backed by professional indemnity cover, and we work for clients across the UK on the same Eurocode basis.

Questions

Common questions

Do you cover the whole of Liverpool and Merseyside?

Yes. We provide structural calculations, surveys and design across Liverpool and the wider area, from Toxteth and Wavertree to the waterfront, Sefton and Wirral. Desktop work is delivered remotely and site visits are arranged across the region.

Do you need to visit my property in Liverpool?

Not always. Calculations for extensions, lofts and wall removals are usually done from drawings and photos. A visit is arranged where a survey, movement assessment or inspection of existing structure is needed.

Can you handle waterfront warehouse conversions?

Yes. We assess and design for conversion of dockside warehouses and former industrial buildings, checking existing floors, columns and load paths and allowing for the made ground common on the waterfront.

Can you provide calculations for Building Control in Liverpool?

Yes. We prepare Eurocode structural calculations and drawings ready for your Building Control team, whether local authority or an approved inspector, written to demonstrate compliance with Approved Document A.
