Structural roof loading appraisal across nine roof areas at a college campus

A campus wide roof loading appraisal covering nine separate roof areas, carried out to establish whether the existing structure could take a proposed solar PV installation.

The brief

What the project needed.

A college campus is not one roof. It is a collection of buildings of different ages and construction, and a single answer covering all of them would be worth very little. Each roof area needed assessing on its own terms before anything was specified.

Work carried out

  • Non-intrusive visual survey of the property, inside and out
  • Aerial drone survey and record photography of each roof area
  • Structural roof loading appraisal across nine roof areas
  • Wind loading and snow loading assessment
  • Justification of panels for gravity and uplift loading
  • Existing roof geometry and member sizes recorded
The engineering

What carlisle college actually involves.

The survey covered nine roof areas across the campus. The inspection was non-intrusive and visual, taking in the roof and the framework beneath it, with particular attention to signs of degradation or deflection in the primary structure.

Drone survey was used to record each roof area in full. On a live campus that avoids working at height over occupied teaching space, and it produces a record that can be revisited later without another visit.

The primary structure was found to be in good condition for its age and the roof sound for continued educational use. The appraisal concluded that the roof and its supporting framework could carry the anticipated loading from the proposed installation.

Fixing design was excluded and recorded as excluded. Being explicit about the boundary of an appraisal matters as much as the findings inside it, because an unstated exclusion is how gaps open up between consultants.
