Structural Design & Calculations

Eurocode structural design and calculations for homes, extensions, conversions and new buildings, ready for Building Control and your contractor.

Structural Design & Calculations

What we cover.

We produce the calculations and design that prove a structure works, from a single steel beam over a knocked-through wall to a full new-build frame. Every output is tied to the relevant Eurocode, the UK National Annex and Approved Document A, so it stands up to Building Control and to any other engineer reviewing it.

In detail

What structural design & calculations actually involves.

Why it matters

Most domestic projects fail Building Control not because the idea is wrong, but because the structural evidence is thin. When you remove a load-bearing wall, add a storey or cut a new opening, the load that used to travel down through that wall has to be caught and carried somewhere else. Our job is to prove, on paper, that the new path works: the beam is the right size and grade, the padstone spreads the load without crushing the masonry beneath it, the bearing length is adequate, and the deflection stays within the limit that keeps finishes from cracking (typically span/360 for brittle finishes).

What we prove

A complete package from us shows the loads gathered from roof, floors and walls above; the member chosen (a UB, UC, RSJ, flitch or timber section) with its section properties; the connection and bearing detail; and the code clause behind each check, referenced to the relevant Eurocode part and its UK National Annex. Where the ground is involved, foundation and underpinning design follows the same discipline. That is what lets your builder price and build with confidence, and what lets Building Control approve without a string of queries.

Materials and coordination

We size in steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber, and we coordinate with your architect's drawings so the structure and the design intent agree before anything is priced on site. If the drawings change, the calculations change with them, that is normal, and we would rather revise once than have a beam turn up that no longer fits.

How Lead Group helps

We produce a full design and drawing package: the loads, the members, the connections and the code clause behind every check, coordinated against your architect's drawings and written so Building Control can follow the reasoning. Checked by a second Chartered Structural Engineer before issue, at a fixed fee agreed before we start.

How we work

What do I need for Building Control?

For most domestic work you need structural calculations and drawings that show the loads, the members chosen and the connections, referenced to Eurocodes 1 to 6 and Approved Document A. We prepare a full design and drawing package so it can be submitted with your application and followed on site.

  • Eurocode 0-9 design and verification
  • Steel, concrete, masonry and timber
  • Calculations sized for Building Control
  • Coordinated with your architect and builder
Not sure what you need?Send us your drawings, or just a photograph of the wall. We will tell you what is required and what it costs before you commit to anything.
Standards & codes

The codes behind structural design & calculations.

Eurocodes 0-9 & UK National Annexes

BS EN 1990 through BS EN 1999 govern the basis of design, actions, and the design of concrete, steel, timber, masonry and aluminium structures. Every calculation we issue references the relevant Eurocode part and its UK National Annex, and states which parts were applied.

Analysis, design & drafting software

Structural analysis and design in Tekla Tedds and Tekla Structural Designer, with Autodesk Robot, CSC Fastrak, CSC Portal Frame, MasterSeries and Hilti Profis used where a scheme suits them. Drawing production in AutoCAD, and modelling in Autodesk Revit where a project is delivered in BIM. Output is issued as readable calculations rather than raw software printouts, so a checker or a building control officer can follow the reasoning.

Approved Document A (Structure)

The Building Regulations requirement your local authority Building Control checks against. Our calculations and drawings are prepared to demonstrate compliance so your submission is accepted without back-and-forth.

Professional indemnity insured

Every report and calculation package is backed by professional indemnity cover, which is what lets a lender, Building Control or another engineer rely on it.

Questions

Common questions

Do you provide calculations for a single beam?

Yes. A common job is sizing a steel or timber beam for a removed wall or new opening, with the padstone and bearing checked. We issue stamped calculations and a sketch your builder can work from.

Can you help with the Building Regulations submission?

We prepare the structural calculations and drawings that go with a Building Control submission and respond to any engineer's queries raised during the check.

How quickly can calculations be turned around?

For straightforward domestic calculations we aim for a short turnaround once we have the drawings and survey information. We give you a realistic target at enquiry rather than a guarantee.

Do I always need calculations to remove a wall?

If the wall is load-bearing, yes, Building Control will want structural calculations for the beam and its supports. If you are not sure whether a wall is load-bearing, send a photo and a floor plan and we will tell you before you commit to anything.

What is a padstone and why does it matter?

A padstone is a concrete or high-strength block that spreads the load from the end of a beam into the wall below. Without one sized correctly, the masonry at the bearing can be overstressed and crush. Our calculations specify the padstone size and bearing length at each end.

Can you match calculations to my architect's drawings?

Yes. We work from your architect's plans and coordinate the structure with the design intent, so the two agree before it is priced or built.
