The ground beneath Manchester is dominated by glacial deposits laid down over the underlying Sherwood Sandstone and Coal Measures. Boulder clay, or glacial till, is common across much of the city and is a firm bearing material, but pockets of soft glaciolacustrine clay and peat occur in the lower-lying areas and old river channels of the Mersey, Irwell and Medlock, where ground can be weaker and wetter.
