Structural engineering across Essex

Essex ranges from the London-fringe suburbs of Romford, Ilford and Loughton, through the towns of Chelmsford, Basildon, Southend, Colchester and Harlow, to the timber-framed and weatherboarded villages of the rural north around Saffron Walden and the Stour valley. The stock mixes Victorian and Edwardian terraces, extensive inter-war and post-war suburban and new-town housing, historic timber-framed and plaster property, and a growing amount of new development along the Thames Gateway. Extensions, lofts, conversions and wall removals dominate the domestic workload, a good deal of it on shrinkable clay. The timber-framed and weatherboarded property of the rural north carries load through its frame, so alterations there are quite different from work on the county's Victorian and modern brick stock, and each needs its own assessment.

We provide the full structural remit for Essex projects: Eurocode calculations and drawings for extensions, loft conversions, wall removals and new openings, structural surveys and defect reports, and design for new build, developer and commercial work. Desktop calculations and reports are delivered anywhere in the county, and where a survey or inspection is needed we arrange attendance across Essex, from the London border to the coast.

London Clay, gravels and coastal alluvium

Much of Essex sits on London Clay, a firm but highly shrinkable soil that swells and shrinks with the seasons and is very sensitive to the trees common across the county, making clay-related subsidence a recognised issue in Essex. Over and around it lie river terrace gravels and sands along the Thames, Lea and Chelmer, glacial till (chalky boulder clay) across the north west, and, along the Thames estuary and the low-lying coast, soft alluvium, marsh deposits and made ground on reclaimed and former industrial land.

We design foundations to suit these conditions rather than assuming a standard depth, using strip, trench-fill, raft or piled solutions to match the bearing stratum. Where London Clay and trees combine we check foundation depth against shrinkage and heave to NHBC guidance, and along the estuary and coast we allow for soft or made ground so the structure carries its loads safely and stays stable. On existing homes we can also assess whether current movement is clay related, checking crack patterns and the position of nearby trees before recommending any foundation or repair work.

How we work with Essex clients

Most structural work is done from your drawings, photographs and survey information, so we turn desktop calculations and reports around quickly for Essex clients. We coordinate with your architect, builder and the local authority Building Control team or an approved inspector so the structure and the design agree before work is priced on site.

Where a physical inspection is needed, for a survey, a movement assessment or a check of existing structure, we arrange a visit across Essex. Every output is tied to the Eurocodes and Approved Document A and backed by professional indemnity cover, and the same standards let us support clients across the UK.

Questions

Common questions

Do you cover the whole of Essex?

Yes. We provide structural calculations, surveys and design across Essex, from Romford and Chelmsford to Colchester, Southend and Saffron Walden. Desktop work is remote and site visits are arranged across the county.

Is subsidence a concern in Essex?

Essex has widespread shrinkable London Clay, so clay-related movement near trees is a recognised issue. We check foundation depth against shrinkage and heave to NHBC guidance and can assess existing movement where a survey is needed, looking at crack patterns and the trees nearby before advising on any repair.

Do you work with timber-framed buildings?

Yes. We assess timber-framed and weatherboarded period property common in north Essex and design openings, beams and repairs in a way that respects how the existing frame carries load.

Can you provide calculations for Building Control in Essex?

Yes. We prepare Eurocode structural calculations and drawings ready for your local authority Building Control or approved inspector, written to demonstrate compliance with Approved Document A and to be followed on site.
