Structural engineers in the East of England

Structural engineering, Building Control calculations and surveys for homes, developments and commercial projects across the East of England, delivered remotely nationwide with site visits arranged across the region.

Structural engineering across the East of England

The East of England takes in Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Its building stock ranges from timber-framed and flint period property across rural Suffolk and Norfolk, through Georgian and Victorian towns such as Cambridge, Norwich, St Albans and Colchester, to the fast-growing commuter and new-town housing of Stevenage, Harlow, Basildon and the Cambridge fringe. Timber frame, flint, soft red brick and clay lump all appear in the older stock and each behaves differently when altered, so knowing the construction is as important as knowing the age. A flint or timber-framed wall carries and shares load in a very different way from a modern cavity wall, and we design accordingly.

We provide the full structural remit for projects across the region: Eurocode calculations and drawings for extensions, loft conversions, wall removals and new openings, structural surveys and defect reports, and design for new build, developer and commercial work. Desktop calculations and reports are delivered anywhere in the East of England, and where a survey or inspection is needed we arrange attendance across the region, from Hertfordshire and Essex up to the Norfolk and Suffolk coast.

Fen peat, chalk and boulder clay

The geology of the East of England is dominated by soft ground in the north and firmer ground in the south. The Fens of Cambridgeshire and west Norfolk carry deep peat and soft silts and clays that compress under load and can leave older buildings sitting on very variable ground. Across the region chalk underlies much of the higher ground, boulder clay (chalky till) blankets Suffolk, Essex and Hertfordshire, and the London Clay of southern Essex and Hertfordshire shrinks and swells with the seasons and trees. Coastal and estuary areas add alluvium and made ground.

We design foundations to suit these conditions rather than assuming a standard depth. On Fenland peat we consider piled or engineered solutions to reach a competent stratum and to control settlement, and on shrinkable clays we check foundation depth against seasonal movement and nearby trees to NHBC guidance, so the structure stays stable whatever the ground beneath it. Where peat thickness varies across a plot we watch for differential settlement in particular, and on the chalky boulder clay of the south the ground is generally firmer but still needs checking for shrinkage where trees are close to the house.

How we work with East of England clients

Most structural work is done from your drawings, photographs and survey information, so we turn desktop calculations and reports around quickly for clients across the region. We coordinate with your architect, builder and the local authority Building Control team or an approved inspector so the structure and the design agree before work is priced on site.

Where a physical inspection is needed, for a survey, a movement assessment or a check of existing structure, we arrange a visit across the East of England. Every output is tied to the Eurocodes and Approved Document A and backed by professional indemnity cover, and the same standards let us support clients across the UK.

Questions

Common questions

Which areas of the East of England do you cover?

We cover the whole region, including Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, from St Albans and Cambridge to Norwich, Ipswich and Colchester. Desktop work is remote and site visits are arranged across the region.

Do you allow for Fenland peat?

Yes. On soft Fen peat and silts we consider piled or engineered foundations to reach a competent stratum and control settlement, informed by the ground investigation for your plot.

Do you work with timber-framed and flint buildings?

Yes. We assess timber-framed, flint and soft-brick period structures and design openings, beams and repairs in a way that respects how the existing structure carries load.

Can you provide calculations for Building Control?

Yes. We prepare Eurocode structural calculations and drawings ready for your local authority Building Control or approved inspector, written to demonstrate compliance with Approved Document A and to be followed on site.
