Structural engineers in the South East

Structural engineering, Building Control calculations and surveys for homes, developments and commercial projects across the South East, delivered remotely nationwide with site visits arranged across the region.

Structural engineering across the South East

The South East covers the commuter counties around London and the south coast: Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Its building stock ranges from Georgian and Victorian property in towns such as Guildford, Tunbridge Wells, Winchester and Brighton, through weatherboarded and timber-framed period cottages across the Weald and the Downs, to extensive post-war and modern commuter housing around Reading, Woking, Crawley and Maidstone. Extensions, loft conversions and wall removals dominate the domestic workload, often on plots with mature trees close to the house. The mix of solid-wall period property and modern cavity construction means the right approach depends heavily on how the particular house was built.

We provide the full structural remit for South East projects: Eurocode calculations and drawings for extensions, loft conversions, wall removals and new openings, structural surveys and defect reports, and design for new build, developer and commercial work. Desktop calculations and reports are delivered anywhere in the region, and where a survey or inspection is needed we arrange attendance across the South East, from the M25 fringe out to the coast.

Chalk, Wealden clay and greensand

The geology of the South East is set by the Weald and the surrounding hills. The North and South Downs and the Chilterns are chalk, generally a sound bearing stratum but capable of holding solution features and swallow holes that can open beneath a foundation. Between and beneath them lie the Wealden clays and the Gault Clay, which shrink and swell with the seasons and react strongly to trees, along with the sands and sandstones of the Upper and Lower Greensand. River valleys and the coastal plain around Hampshire and Sussex carry alluvium and made ground.

We design foundations to suit these conditions rather than assuming a standard depth, using strip, trench-fill, raft or piled solutions to match the bearing stratum and any shrinkage risk. Where chalk raises the chance of solution features, or where clay and mature trees combine, we set the foundation depth and detail to NHBC guidance so the structure stays stable through the seasons. On greensand we check for variable bearing and water where springs are common, and along the coastal plain and river valleys we allow for the softer alluvium that can sit close to the surface beneath an otherwise firm crust.

How we work with South East clients

Most structural work is done from your drawings, photographs and survey information, so we turn desktop calculations and reports around quickly for clients across the South East. We coordinate with your architect, builder and the local authority Building Control team or an approved inspector so the structure and the design agree before work is priced on site.

Where a physical inspection is needed, for a survey, a movement assessment or a check of existing structure, we arrange a visit across the region. Every output is tied to the Eurocodes and Approved Document A and backed by professional indemnity cover, and the same standards let us support clients across the UK.

Questions

Common questions

Which areas of the South East do you cover?

We cover the whole region, including Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, from Guildford and Reading to Brighton, Winchester and Maidstone. Desktop work is remote and site visits are arranged across the region.

Do you need to visit my property?

Not always. Calculations for extensions, lofts and wall removals are usually prepared from drawings and photos. A visit is arranged where a survey, movement assessment or inspection of existing structure is needed.

Do you allow for chalk and Wealden clay?

Yes. We take the local geology into account, checking for chalk solution features and clay shrinkage near trees, and design foundations to suit so the structure is not affected by ground movement.

Can you provide calculations for Building Control?

Yes. We prepare Eurocode structural calculations and drawings ready for your local authority Building Control or approved inspector, written to demonstrate compliance with Approved Document A and to be followed on site.
