Wolverhampton and the wider Black Country sit over ground worked extensively for coal, ironstone, fireclay and limestone. Shallow coal workings are widespread, and limestone was mined in large chambers across parts of the area, some of which have required major stabilisation.
The result is that ground conditions here demand investigation rather than assumption. Recorded workings, unrecorded workings and made ground from centuries of industry can all occur on a single site, and each has a different structural implication.
