In detail

Frames for farm use

Agricultural buildings are usually large, open portal or braced frames that have to work hard for a modest budget. The complication is the range of things they hold, from loose-housed cattle and bedding, to hanging feed barriers, to grain and potatoes piled against the walls. We set out a frame that carries the roof, wind and any stored-material load, keeping internal columns clear so machinery can move and animals can be handled, and size the steel to BS EN 1993 with the loads a working farm really applies.

Durability matters as much as strength on a farm. Livestock buildings are corrosive, damp environments with ammonia in the air, so we specify protection and detailing that survives the conditions, and we keep vulnerable steel out of the worst zones. Where an existing barn is being reused or extended, we survey the old timber or steel frame, work out what it can safely carry and design only the strengthening the new use requires.

Wind, snow and exposure

Farm buildings are often in the most exposed places, on hilltops and open plains with nothing to shelter them, so wind dominates the design. We calculate wind actions to BS EN 1991-1-4 and its UK National Annex for the real exposure of the site, and for open-sided or partly-clad barns we include the internal pressure that a big open door or gap creates, which can greatly increase the uplift and the load on the frame.

Snow load to BS EN 1991-1-3 is checked for the altitude of the site, which for upland farms can be well above the loads a lowland building sees, and we allow for drifting against lean-tos and adjacent buildings. Open and monopitch farm structures behave differently from sealed sheds, so we design the bracing and fixings for the wind getting inside as well as pushing on the outside.

Stored crops, retaining walls and foundations

Storing grain, potatoes or silage puts horizontal pressure on the walls that a normal building never sees. We design grain walls and retaining panel walls for the lateral pressure of the stored material, which increases with depth and changes with moisture, and we design the frame to resist the load being pushed outwards. Silage clamps and slurry stores are effectively retaining structures and need to be designed as such, with attention to the aggressive chemistry as well as the loads.

Foundations follow the ground, which on a farm can be anything from good gravel to soft made ground over old yards. We design pad, strip or piled foundations for the frame and the wall loads, and where the building sits on a slope or against stored material we make sure the whole thing is stable against sliding and overturning, not just strong enough vertically.
