What are structural calculations and when do you need them?

Structural calculations prove a structure works. Here is what they contain and when they are required.

What they are

Structural calculations are the engineering working that shows a structure can carry its loads safely. They set out the loads, the members chosen, the connections and the code references, tied to the Eurocodes and Approved Document A.

When you need them

You typically need calculations for removing a load-bearing wall, extensions and loft conversions, new builds, beams and lintels, underpinning and retaining walls. Building Control will ask for them as part of the application.

How long they take

For straightforward domestic work we aim for a short turnaround once we have the drawings and any survey information. We give a realistic target at enquiry rather than a guarantee.
