30 Aytoun Road: heavily photographed structural calculation package

A calculation package built on an unusually thorough photographic survey, which is what allows design decisions to be made about a building rather than about its drawings.

The brief

What the project needed.

A property where the existing structure needed recording in detail before calculations could be produced with any confidence in the assumptions behind them.

Work carried out

  • Extensive photographic survey of the existing building
  • Structural calculation package
  • Assessment of the existing structure as found
The engineering

What 30 aytoun road actually involves.

120 photographs on a domestic project is not excessive, it is the difference between designing for the building that exists and designing for the one on the drawings. Older properties have been altered, and those alterations are frequently undocumented and occasionally unsupported.

The photographic record is part of the deliverable rather than a working aid. It evidences the condition and arrangement the calculations were based on, which matters if the design is questioned later or if the property changes hands.

The calculation package was issued as a single structural report covering the elements affected by the proposed work.
