Do internal alterations always need a structural engineer?
Not every one, but any change that moves a load-bearing wall, cuts a floor, forms a new opening or adds significant load does. Even a partition can be structural. We check whether your change affects the load path and design what is needed.
Reconfiguring the inside of a home
Internal alterations cover the changes that do not extend the footprint but do change how the house works structurally, moving a wall to enlarge a room, forming a new opening for a stair, cutting a hole in a floor for a landing, or relocating a bathroom onto a floor never designed for the extra weight. Each of these shifts load in a way that has to be checked, even when the change looks minor on the plan. A partition that seems non-structural can be carrying a floor above or restraining a longer wall.
We start by mapping what the existing structure does, which walls carry load, which way the joists run, where the beams and load-bearing lines sit, before designing the change. That way a single alteration is checked against the whole load path, not treated in isolation. It is common for one internal change to trigger a second, moving a wall means the floor above now spans further, or forming a stairwell means the remaining joists need trimming and doubling.
Floors, stairs and new openings
Cutting an opening in a floor for a new staircase or a double-height space removes joists that were carrying load, so the joists either side have to pick up what the cut ones were doing. We design the trimmer and trimming joists around the opening, size them for the extra load and detail the joist hangers and connections. Where the opening is wide, the trimmer may become a steel or a doubled timber to keep deflection and bounce under control.
Changing a floor use, turning a loft store into a room, putting a heavy stone bathroom over a bedroom, or laying a screed on a timber floor, adds load the original floor may not have been designed for. We check the existing joists against the new imposed load, and where they fall short we design strengthening, sistering the joists, adding a mid-span beam, or replacing them. The point is that the floor is checked for its new job, not assumed to cope because it looks solid.
One coordinated package for Building Control
A refurbishment often involves several small structural changes at once, a new opening here, a moved wall there, a trimmed floor for a stair. Handling them as one coordinated package is cleaner than a scatter of separate calculations, because the load paths interact and Building Control can see the whole altered structure in one submission. We set out each element and how it connects to the next, so the builder has a single consistent set of information.

I want to add a new staircase, what is involved structurally?
Forming a stairwell means cutting joists, so the surrounding joists have to carry the load the cut ones did. We design the trimmer and trimming joists, size them for the extra load and detail the hangers, keeping deflection and bounce in check.
Can my floor take a stone bathroom or a new screed?
Not always without checking. Heavy finishes add load the original floor may not have been designed for. We assess the existing joists against the new load and design strengthening where they fall short, rather than assume they will cope.
How much do internal alteration calculations cost?
