Structural engineers in the North West

Structural engineering, Building Control calculations and surveys for homes, developments and commercial projects across the North West, delivered remotely nationwide with site visits arranged across the region.

Structural engineering across the North West

The North West spans Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cheshire and Cumbria. Its building stock ranges from dense Victorian brick terraces and mill and dock housing across Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Bolton and Preston, through inter-war and post-war suburban estates, to stone farmhouses and cottages in the Lake District and the Pennine fringe. A large stock of former mills, warehouses and industrial buildings across the conurbations is now being converted, alongside steady domestic extension, loft and conversion work, and each type carries load in its own way. A cast-iron or steel mill frame, a solid-brick terrace and a modern cavity house each call for a different approach to any alteration.

We provide the full structural remit for North West projects: Eurocode calculations and drawings for extensions, loft conversions, wall removals and new openings, structural surveys and defect reports, and design for new build, developer and commercial work. Desktop calculations and reports are delivered anywhere in the region, and where a survey or inspection is needed we arrange attendance across the North West, from the city cores out to the Lakes and the coast.

Coal Measures, sandstone and mossland peat

North West geology is set by Carboniferous and Permo-Triassic rock and by glaciation. The Manchester and Lancashire coalfields sit on Coal Measures sandstones, mudstones and coal seams with a long mining legacy, while Sherwood Sandstone underlies much of the Cheshire and Merseyside plain, giving generally good bearing but also, in Cheshire, buried salt and brine-related ground. Widespread glacial till and boulder clay blanket the lowlands, and the mosslands of Lancashire and Greater Manchester, such as Chat Moss, carry deep, compressible peat that will not support conventional footings.

We design foundations to suit these conditions rather than assuming a standard depth, using strip, trench-fill, raft or piled solutions to match the bearing stratum. On mossland peat we consider piled or engineered foundations to reach a competent stratum and control settlement, and where a Coal Authority or brine search flags workings we design the foundations to suit so the structure stays stable. The glacial till across the region can vary from stiff clay to soft pockets over a short distance, so we treat the ground investigation, not a standard depth, as the basis for the design. On the older stone stock of the Lakes and the Pennine fringe we also allow for shallow rubble footings when altering existing walls.

How we work with North West clients

Most structural work is done from your drawings, photographs and survey information, so we turn desktop calculations and reports around quickly for clients across the region. We coordinate with your architect, builder and the local authority Building Control team or an approved inspector so the structure and the design agree before work is priced on site.

Where a physical inspection is needed, for a survey, a movement assessment or a check of existing structure, we arrange a visit across the North West. Every output is tied to the Eurocodes and Approved Document A and backed by professional indemnity cover, and the same standards let us support clients across the UK.

Questions

Common questions

Which areas of the North West do you cover?

We cover the whole region, including Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cheshire and Cumbria, from Manchester, Salford and Liverpool to Preston, Chester and the Lake District. Desktop work is remote and site visits are arranged across the region.

Do you allow for mossland peat?

Yes. On deep mossland peat such as Chat Moss we consider piled or engineered foundations to reach a competent stratum and control settlement, informed by the ground investigation for your plot.

Do you convert mills and warehouses?

Yes. We assess former mill, warehouse and industrial structures and design alterations, new openings, floors and conversions in a way that respects how the existing frame and masonry carry load.

Can you provide calculations for Building Control?

Yes. We prepare Eurocode structural calculations and drawings ready for your local authority Building Control or approved inspector, written to demonstrate compliance with Approved Document A and to be followed on site.
