Structural engineers in Cheshire

Structural engineering, Building Control calculations and surveys for homes, developments and commercial projects across Cheshire, delivered remotely nationwide with site visits arranged across the county.

Structural engineering across Cheshire

Cheshire runs from the historic city of Chester and the market towns of Nantwich, Northwich and Middlewich, through the industrial and rail centre of Crewe, to the affluent commuter belt of Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Knutsford and Macclesfield on the Manchester fringe. The stock mixes black-and-white timber-framed period property, Georgian and Victorian brick, extensive suburban and detached commuter housing, and rural farmhouses and steadings. Larger extensions, basements, garden rooms and substantial wall removals feature strongly across the county, often on generous plots. The black-and-white timber-framed property found around Chester and the market towns needs particular care, since the frame rather than the infill carries the building.

We provide the full structural remit for Cheshire projects: Eurocode calculations and drawings for extensions, loft conversions, wall removals and new openings, structural surveys and defect reports, and design for new build and commercial work. Desktop calculations and reports are delivered anywhere in the county, and where a survey or inspection is needed we arrange attendance across Cheshire, from the Welsh border to the Peak District fringe.

Sandstone, salt and brine ground

Cheshire sits largely on the Triassic rocks of the Cheshire Basin: Sherwood Sandstone, which gives generally good bearing and the red ridge that Chester and Beeston are built on, and the Mercia Mudstone that fills much of the plain, a firm but locally shrinkable clay-rich rock. The mudstone contains thick beds of rock salt around Northwich, Middlewich and Winsford, and centuries of salt and brine extraction have left a real risk of subsidence and old brine-run cavities in parts of mid Cheshire. Glacial till blankets much of the plain, and river valleys carry alluvium.

We design foundations to suit these conditions rather than assuming a standard depth, using strip, trench-fill, raft or piled solutions to match the bearing stratum. In the salt districts we take account of brine subsidence history and any ground investigation, and on shrinkable mudstone with trees we check foundation depth to NHBC guidance so the structure stays stable. The glacial till across the plain can change from stiff clay to softer pockets over a short distance, so we base the foundation on the ground investigation rather than a standard depth. On the sandstone ridges around Chester and Beeston, by contrast, rockhead is often shallow, which changes how a footing should be founded and can simplify the design.

How we work with Cheshire clients

Most structural work is done from your drawings, photographs and survey information, so we turn desktop calculations and reports around quickly for Cheshire clients. We coordinate with your architect, builder and the local authority Building Control team or an approved inspector so the structure and the design agree before work is priced on site.

Where a physical inspection is needed, for a survey, a movement assessment or a check of existing structure, we arrange a visit across Cheshire. Every output is tied to the Eurocodes and Approved Document A and backed by professional indemnity cover, and the same standards let us support clients across the UK.

Questions

Common questions

Do you cover the whole of Cheshire?

Yes. We provide structural calculations, surveys and design across Cheshire, from Chester, Crewe and Northwich to Wilmslow, Knutsford and Macclesfield. Desktop work is remote and site visits are arranged across the county.

Do you allow for salt and brine subsidence?

Yes. In the mid Cheshire salt districts we take account of the brine extraction history and any ground investigation and design foundations to suit so the structure is not affected by subsidence risk.

Do you work with black-and-white timber-framed buildings?

Yes. We assess timber-framed period property and design openings, beams and repairs in a way that respects how the existing frame and infill carry load.

Can you provide calculations for Building Control in Cheshire?

Yes. We prepare Eurocode structural calculations and drawings ready for your local authority Building Control or approved inspector, written to demonstrate compliance with Approved Document A and to be followed on site.
