Hip-to-gable loft conversion structural engineering

A hip-to-gable conversion rebuilds a sloping hipped end as a vertical gable wall, which changes how the roof is braced and adds a new wall that has to be carried down to the ground. We prepare the calculations and drawings that prove it and satisfy Building Control, for clients across the UK.

What does a hip-to-gable conversion involve structurally?

You remove the sloping hipped end and build a vertical gable, which wins head height but removes bracing the roof relied on. The roof is reorganised with a ridge beam or purlins onto the new gable, and the gable is designed for wind and carried down to the ground.

Removing the hip and building a gable

A hipped roof slopes on three or four sides, and that hipped end is part of what braces the roof and gives it stability. A hip-to-gable conversion takes down the sloping end and builds it back up as a vertical gable wall, which both wins the head height needed for the room and removes the bracing the hip used to provide. The roof then has to be reorganised so the ridge, the rafters and the new gable all work together, usually with a ridge beam or new purlins carried on steel where the hip rafters and their bracing have gone.

We work out the roof loads that were carried by the hip, design the new arrangement that replaces it, and size the members that now span to the gable. The gable itself becomes a new load-bearing wall at the end of the roof, so the ridge and purlins commonly bear onto it, and we make sure it is tied to the roof and the main structure so it does not act as a tall, unrestrained panel exposed to wind.

The new gable wall and the wind on it

Building a gable up to the ridge creates a tall triangle of masonry that has to resist wind pressure and suction as well as carry the roof. We check the gable for the wind loads set out in BS EN 1991-1-4 and its UK National Annex, and design how it is restrained at the top by the roof and along its length by the floor and any returns, so it does not flex or crack. Where the gable is large or exposed we may add restraint straps, a wind post or a stiffening return to keep it within limits.

The gable also has to be carried down. The new masonry sits on the existing external wall below, so we check that wall can take the extra load and that the foundation under it is adequate. On most houses it is, because the original hipped wall already carried roof load at that end, but where the new gable is heavier than what it replaces we confirm the load path to the ground and design any strengthening needed.

New floor and coordination with Building Control

As with any loft conversion, the room needs a new floor designed for habitable loads, usually joists spanning between steel beams that bypass the old ceiling joists. On a hip-to-gable the new gable often gives a useful bearing for one of those beams, so we coordinate the floor steel with the gable and the roof restructuring so the whole thing works as one. Each beam reaction is traced through the walls and checked to the foundations.

The calculations are prepared to the Eurocodes, the relevant UK National Annex and Approved Document A, and cover the roof restructuring, the new gable, the floor and the load path to the ground as one package. We work from your architect's or loft specialist's drawings, coordinate the steel with the head height and stair, and issue calculations your builder and Building Control can follow without a string of queries.
