Does a small porch really need a structural engineer?
Where it is fixed to the house, has a roof to carry or sits on new foundations, yes. A porch is a small building with its own loads, and wind in particular can govern. We design it and provide calculations where the work is notifiable.
Small structure, real loads
A porch looks like a minor addition, but structurally it is a small building with its own roof, walls and foundation, and it has to be designed for the same load cases as anything else. The roof carries dead load and, depending on region, snow and imposed load, and the whole thing has to resist wind, which on an exposed entrance can be the load that governs. A lightweight canopy that is not properly held down can be lifted or pushed over by wind before it ever sees a snowfall.
We design the porch to suit its form, a masonry porch with dwarf walls and a tiled roof, a glazed or timber-framed porch, or an open canopy on posts. The roof structure, whether a small pitched roof, a mono-pitch or a flat roof, is sized for its span and loads, and the walls or posts are designed to carry it down to the ground. Even at this scale the load path has to be complete and the connections detailed.
Cantilevered canopies and fixings
A cantilevered entrance canopy, one that projects from the wall over a doorway with no posts under the front edge, is the most demanding porch type because the whole load is held by the fixing back to the building. The canopy wants to rotate about its base, so the connection has to resist both the downward load and the overturning moment, and it has to be fixed into masonry or a frame strong enough to take it. We design the steelwork, the back fixings and check the wall or structure they anchor into.
Where the canopy fixes to a cavity wall, the outer leaf alone cannot be relied on, so we detail fixings that reach the inner leaf or a padstone, or a frame that carries the load down beside the door. Wind uplift on a canopy is a real load, so the fixings are designed for suction as well as gravity. The result is a canopy that stays put in a storm, not one held on by fixings sized for the weight alone.
Foundations and Building Control
A porch on the ground needs foundations like any structure, and because it sits against the house we design them to work with the existing footing so the two do not move apart and crack the join. On most porches a modest strip or trench-fill foundation suits, but clay soils, nearby trees or a doorway over a drain change what is needed, and we design for the ground rather than assume a standard depth. A canopy fixed only to the wall may need no new foundation at all, which we confirm.
Many small porches fall within permitted development and some are exempt, but the structure still has to be sound and Building Control will want calculations where the work is notifiable or where a canopy is fixed to the house. We prepare the package to the Eurocodes, the UK National Annex and Approved Document A. We agree a single fixed fee fixed up front, and we serve clients across the UK with site visits arranged by region.
