Right-sizing the frame for the job

A storage shed and a machinery workshop can look identical from the road but need very different structures underneath. The starting point is what the building actually does, whether it stores light goods, houses vehicles, carries a small crane or supports roof-mounted plant, because that sets the loads and therefore the steel. We design most sheds as portal frames or simple braced frames, choosing the lightest arrangement that carries the real loads to BS EN 1993 and passes Building Control.

The economy of a shed comes from bay spacing, frame pitch and section choice as much as from the tonnage. We set the bay spacing so the purlins and cladding work efficiently, keep the roof pitch shallow to save cladding, and pick standard hot-rolled or cold-formed sections that a fabricator can source without premium. The aim is a building that is honestly sized for its use, not over-engineered to a template and not so light it fails the wind case.

Cladding, purlins and weather

The envelope is a big part of a shed's cost and its structure. We design the purlins and side rails to carry the cladding and to brace the frame, matching the cold-formed section to the panel type, the span and the wind pressure. Single-skin, twin-skin and composite panels each apply different loads and fixings, so we coordinate the cladding system with the secondary steel rather than leaving it to the cladding supplier alone.

Wind and snow drive the loading on a light building. We calculate wind actions to BS EN 1991-1-4, and the uplift case usually sizes the roof fixings and the holding-down bolts, since a light roof wants to lift in a storm. Snow load to BS EN 1991-1-3 is checked for the site and for drifting where the shed sits next to a taller structure, and we make sure gutters, valleys and openings do not create local overloads.

Bases, slabs and getting it built

Even a simple shed needs its feet and floor designed properly. We design the foundations for the column reactions including uplift and any base thrust, usually as pad foundations or, where the ground is weak, a reinforced slab that holds the feet. The floor slab is designed for the loads the shed will really carry, from light foot traffic to fork-lift wheels or racking, with a joint layout that keeps cracking under control.

We deliver calculations and drawings a fabricator and groundworker can build from without a string of queries, and we keep the details simple so the shed goes up quickly. Where a client is buying a kit or a supplier's standard frame, we can check that frame against the actual site loads and Building Regulations, and design the foundations and any changes the site needs, so the standard product is genuinely safe on the ground it is going on.
