Structural engineers in the North East

Structural engineering, Building Control calculations and surveys for homes, developments and commercial projects across the North East, delivered remotely nationwide with site visits arranged across the region.

Structural engineering across the North East

The North East takes in Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland and the Tees Valley. Its building stock includes the distinctive Tyneside flats and Victorian and Edwardian terraces of Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and South Shields, the former pit-village and colliery housing of the Durham and Northumberland coalfield, stone farmhouses across rural Northumberland, and the industrial and post-war housing of Middlesbrough, Stockton and Darlington. Extensions, lofts, conversions and wall removals dominate the domestic workload, with Tyneside flats raising their own shared-structure questions. Because a Tyneside flat shares floors and walls with the home above or below, any opening has to consider the whole building, not just one dwelling.

We provide the full structural remit for North East projects: Eurocode calculations and drawings for extensions, loft conversions, wall removals and new openings, structural surveys and defect reports, and design for new build, developer and commercial work. Desktop calculations and reports are delivered anywhere in the region, and where a survey or inspection is needed we arrange attendance across the North East, from Tyneside to Teesside and the rural north.

Coal Measures, Magnesian Limestone and till

North East geology is dominated by Carboniferous rock and its mining legacy. The Durham and Northumberland coalfield sits on Coal Measures sandstones, mudstones and coal seams, worked extensively for centuries, so shallow workings, shafts and mine gas can affect a site. To the east a belt of Permian Magnesian Limestone runs down the Durham and Sunderland coast, capable of holding natural cavities, while the Tees Valley carries Mercia Mudstone and, near the coast and estuary, soft alluvium and made ground. Glacial till and boulder clay blanket much of the region in deposits of variable stiffness.

We design foundations to suit these conditions rather than assuming a standard depth, using strip, trench-fill, raft or piled solutions to match the bearing stratum. Where a Coal Authority search or ground investigation flags shallow workings, limestone cavities or soft estuary ground, we set the foundation type and depth to carry the loads safely so the structure stays stable. Former colliery and heavy-industry sites often carry made ground of very variable depth, so we check it rather than assume it is uniform. On the Magnesian Limestone coast we allow for the chance of natural cavities beneath the footprint before settling the foundation design.

How we work with North East clients

Most structural work is done from your drawings, photographs and survey information, so we turn desktop calculations and reports around quickly for clients across the region. We coordinate with your architect, builder and the local authority Building Control team or an approved inspector so the structure and the design agree before work is priced on site.

Where a physical inspection is needed, for a survey, a movement assessment or a check of existing structure, we arrange a visit across the North East. Every output is tied to the Eurocodes and Approved Document A and backed by professional indemnity cover, and the same standards let us support clients across the UK.

Questions

Common questions

Which areas of the North East do you cover?

We cover the whole region, including Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland and the Tees Valley, from Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland to Durham, Middlesbrough and the rural north. Desktop work is remote and site visits are arranged across the region.

Do you allow for coal workings and mine shafts?

Yes. Across the Durham and Northumberland coalfield we review any Coal Authority search and ground investigation and design foundations to suit shallow workings and shafts so the structure is not affected.

Do you work with Tyneside flats and terraces?

Yes. We assess Tyneside flats and Victorian terraces and design openings, beams and repairs in a way that respects how the existing masonry and shared structure carry load.

Can you provide calculations for Building Control?

Yes. We prepare Eurocode structural calculations and drawings ready for your local authority Building Control or approved inspector, written to demonstrate compliance with Approved Document A and to be followed on site.
